The Quran (Arabic: al-Kir’an; "the recitation") is the sacred book of Islam. It is believed to have been revealed by God through a series of separate messages to Muhammad over the major part of his lifetime in Mecca and Medina, though it was not compiled into a single volume until after the Prophet’s death. The Quran is organized into 114 chapters, or suras. Unlike the Jewish or Christian scriptures, the Quran does not give a detailed account of historical events but instead uses events from history as metaphors for religious teachings.

Despite being illiterate, the Prophet dictated the text of the Quran to scribes who then wrote it down. This has preserved a pure Arabic text that cannot be changed or translated, and it has also fostered an important Islamic tradition of Qurnic exegesis, known as tafsr. It brings together pages from dispersed Qurans, a variety of manuscript and book formats, and contemporary interpretations of its verses.
